The Free & Clear Dishwasher Gel uses plant-derived surfactants (primarily alkyl polyglucosides — derived from plant sugars and fatty alcohols) rather than petroleum-based linear alkylbenzene sulfonates. Alkyl polyglucosides biodegrade rapidly, have low aquatic toxicity, and are naturally compatible with hard water without requiring phosphates (which Seventh Generation removed from all dishwasher formulas before regulatory requirements mandated it).
